🏓 Google Launches Ping-Pong Robot​

Google DeepMind has created a robot that can play table tennis (ping-pong) at a level close to that of a human. This robot has managed to win 45% of its matches against players with different skill levels.

Key Points:

• The robot won every match (100%) when playing against beginners and won 55% of its games against players with intermediate skills across 29 matches
• To improve its skills, the robot uses both simulated practice and real-world playing data
• The robot can adjust its strategy in real-time, depending on how its opponent plays
• Despite its success against less experienced players, the robot still faces challenges when competing with advanced players due to limitations in its physical abilities and skill level

Our take: While AI has been used to compete against humans in games like chess for some time, applying AI to physical games like ping-pong is a new frontier. This development brings us closer to the goal of creating robots that can perform tasks in the real world at a human level, with the ability to adapt quickly to changing situations.

🤖 Figure Launches New Humanoid Robot​

A startup called Figure AI, which is supported by OpenAI, has introduced its latest humanoid robot, Figure 02. This robot can work entirely on its own in complicated environments like a BMW factory.

Key Points:

• Figure 02 uses advanced AI from OpenAI that allows it to have full conversations with people, understanding and responding to speech
• The robot is equipped with a Vision Language Model (VLM), enabling it to make quick, sensible decisions based on what it sees and to correct any mistakes it makes
• It has six RGB cameras that give it a 360-degree view, helping it move around and interact with the real world effectively
• The robot is 5'6" tall, weighs 132 lbs, can lift up to 44 lbs, and has a 20-hour battery life, thanks to its custom 2.25 KWh battery pack

Our Take: The competition to create the most advanced humanoid robot is heating up. Figure AI's CEO, Brett Adcock, claims that Figure 02 is now the "most advanced humanoid on the planet," directly challenging Elon Musk's Tesla Optimus robot. With its partnership with OpenAI, Figure AI might have an edge, leaving the world eager to see how Elon Musk will respond.
